A distillation column is a key piece of machinery used to separate or distil liquid mixtures into the constituent parts that make up the overall mixture. It is an enclosed cylindrical structure with engineered points for the addition and removal of liquids. It is often composed of glass or metal. Different compounds can evaporate off the mixture and be removed from the column due to differences in their relative boiling points, also known as volatilities. Chemical engineers frequently utilise fractional distillation towers to separate huge amounts of liquids in a single column, such as in the production of oil and natural gas.
Two components are divided into two product streams by a straightforward column. The two primary components in multi-component systems that need to be separated are known as the light and heavy.
These columns use different types of packings, structured material, this is required for distillation process. Type of these packings depend upon the process requirements & product characteristics as well as flow pattern of liquid.
